Other Spiders in Iraq

Of the spiders in Iraq, the most dangerous ones are the black widow, the tarantula, and the yellow sac spider. They have poisonous bites that can be fatal if you do not seek medical attention immediately. Scorpions, although not spiders, should also be noted for their letal stings and abundance in Iraq. With any sting or bite in Iraq, be sure to seek out treatment immediately to check for poison and to take action if needed.

Black Widow Spider

Even though they get their name from killing the father of their children and eating him, their color is actually black as well. They are a common spider in the United States and so will probably be easily recognizable for anyone going to Iraq. They are relatively small, only about a half inch in size, but can be extremely deadly. They are commonly found in debris piles and in wooded areas or in tall grassy areas. Only females can bite you and normally only when provoked or protecting its egg sac.

Tarntulas

Tarantulas are among the least aggressive spiders and will retreat if given a chance. If it feels threatened, it will defend itself by putting up its front legs and showing its fangs. They normally are not out during the day but prefer to stay in their burrows in the ground. Their venom is not usually lethal to humans unless the human is allergic. The most severe reaction is anaphylactic shock, but usually people will only receive swelling and discomfort.

Yellow Sac Spiders

The yellow sac spider is also common to Iraq, and like the tarantula, it is not very dangerous to humans. It will only cause some discomfort and a dry, itchy rash. It can be several colors: orange, pale yellow, red, or pale green. They are usually indoors, especially during the cooler months and are normally only out at night. It is one of the most common spider bite in Iraq, probably because they tend to have some fairly close interactions with human beings.
